The goal is to transform the space of the beach using the place itself as the main design material (sunlight, white gravel, horizon…). This is why only one component is used to fit out the whole scene of the festival: wooden poles driven into the ground, creating a grid of vertical elements.

The beach is an isotropic space immediately available and perceptible. During the intervention, the grid allows to assign different landscape, sensorial and functional values to the space. The new layout of the beach is not entirely perceptible at first sight and needs to be explored and experienced.

The project establishes a system of empty spaces, whose sequence generates a heterogeneous relationship between the beach and the street, as well as between the beach and the sea.

Recalling a familiar image – like umbrellas on the sand -, the intervention works out the theme of the beach as a limit of contemporary urban landscape: open, free and constantly changing.

Empty spaces host the equipment, designed as white, essential objects in dialogue with the rough materiality of the wooden poles. The stages are double frames that look towards both the seascape and the city, explaining the double landscape value of the intervention.

While the empty areas host the main activities required by the festival’s original program, the grid offers a variety of usages. As infrastructure, the poles can embrace multiple behaviors and tempt people to take over the spaces, be it improvising a coverage among the poles, or a goalpost, or hanging a hammock…
